Salman Khan Gets Delhi HC Notice Over Kala Hiran Film Release

The legal dispute between Salman Khan and the makers of the upcoming film “Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy” has taken another turn, with the Delhi High Court seeking the actor’s response to a plea filed by the film’s makers.

On Tuesday, October 6, the court asked Salman Khan to respond to a plea seeking a stay on his case against the film’s release. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani heard the matter. The makers have argued that the dispute raised by Khan is already being considered in an earlier case filed by the actor.

The film, which is said to be inspired by the 1998 blackbuck poaching case involving Salman Khan, has been at the centre of a legal battle for several months. Khan has approached the court seeking restrictions on the film’s release, promotion and distribution, claiming that it affects his personality and publicity rights.

Producer Amit Jani, however, has argued that Khan’s latest proceedings amount to parallel litigation. According to the producer, the same film, its promotional material and questions related to Khan’s personality rights are already part of an earlier case.

The application also points out that Khan had previously filed a suit seeking protection of his personality rights. An ex-parte interim injunction was granted in that case in December 2025. Khan later sought a specific interim injunction against “Kala Hiran”, which is still pending before the court.

The legal dispute had earlier seen another important development in July. The Delhi High Court directed the removal of the film’s teaser and related online posts after objections raised by Khan. The court had said that the makers could not commercially use the actor’s name, mannerisms or other distinctive features without his permission, or circulate material that could harm his reputation.

The makers have maintained that “Kala Hiran” is not a biopic of Salman Khan. They have also argued that the actor cannot use personality rights to stop the depiction of public events connected with the blackbuck controversy.

Khan, on the other hand, has said that his objection is not to people discussing the controversy, but to what he claims is the unauthorised commercial use of his identity and recognisable features.

The latest court notice does not mean that a final decision has been taken on the film’s release. The court will first hear Salman Khan’s response to the producers’ plea seeking a stay on his proceedings.

With both sides continuing to present their arguments, the question now is whether the court will allow the separate proceedings to continue or decide that the dispute should be dealt with through the earlier case.
