MUMBAI — The past relationship between Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai, now Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, continues to spark public interest years after its contentious end. The duo, once celebrated for their on-screen chemistry and off-screen romance, saw their relationship unravel amid serious allegations, with Rai claiming she endured abusive behavior from Khan. In a resurfaced interview, Khan firmly denied these accusations, offering a stark rebuttal that has reignited discussions about their controversial split.
The romance between Khan and Rai began in the late 1990s, capturing widespread media attention during their work together on films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. However, their relationship reportedly ended on a bitter note in 2002. In a 2002 interview, Rai opened up about the toll the relationship took on her, alleging she faced verbal, physical, and emotional abuse, as well as infidelity and indignity from Khan during his struggles with alcohol. She stated, “I stood by him enduring his alcoholic misbehaviour in its worst phases, and in turn, I was at the receiving end of his abuse verbal, physical and emotional, infidelity, and indignity.”
In response, Khan, speaking to in an earlier interview, dismissed the allegations. He recalled an incident where a journalist questioned him about the claims, prompting him to slam a table in frustration, startling the reporter. “I said, ‘Now if I hit somebody, it’s obviously going to be a fight. I’m going to be angry. Forget whack, I’m going to give her my best shot. I don’t think she’ll survive it. So no, it’s not true, and I don’t know for what reason that was said,’” Khan told, denying any physical violence and questioning the motives behind the accusations.
Following their breakup, Rai married actor Abhishek Bachchan in 2007, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya, in 2011. Khan, meanwhile, remains unmarried. The resurfaced interview has brought renewed attention to their past, highlighting the complexities of their once-high-profile relationship.
