Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan remain one of Bollywood’s most legendary on-screen pairings, having starred together in classics such as Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Suhaag, Do Anjaane, Mr Natwarlal, and Ram Balram. Their chemistry fueled persistent rumors of an off-screen romance, though neither has ever confirmed it. Rekha has publicly expressed profound admiration for Bachchan, telling Simi Garewal in an interview that she had absolutely fallen in love with him, adding that anyone would feel the same. She described her affection as encompassing “duniya bhar ka love” and more, while insisting there was no personal connection to deny.
In a recent interview with ANI, Rekha’s close friend, author, fashion designer, and entrepreneur Bina Ramani, shed light on the actress’s deep emotional ties to Bachchan. Ramani, who shared a strong personal bond with Rekha, described her as childlike and pure, shaped by a challenging childhood lacking sufficient parental love. Starting work at age 13 or 14, Rekha craved emotional security, which she found in her connection with Bachchan.

Ramani recounted that when they met, Rekha’s life revolved entirely around Bachchan. Affirming the depth of her feelings, Ramani stated: “Yes, she believed she belonged to him in spirit. And she believed that he belonged to her in spirit. They had a communication. These things can happen.” Rekha sought open validation rather than secrecy in the relationship.
However, Bachchan’s marriage to Jaya Bachchan and his entry into politics complicated matters. Public acknowledgment became impossible, causing Rekha significant distress. Ramani recalled Rekha visiting her in New York during a difficult period after Bachchan became a public figure in politics, noting that he likely indicated their alliance could no longer continue publicly.
The duo last appeared together on screen in Yash Chopra’s 1981 film Silsila, which also featured Jaya Bachchan.
