Residents of Lyari, the Karachi neighbourhood that forms the backdrop of Dhurandhar: The Revenge, are now openly demanding a share of the film’s box office earnings and they’re not thinking small. Some want up to 80 per cent redirected toward local development.
The film, starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, crossed Rs 1,000 crore globally in recent weeks. That number apparently landed hard in Lyari.
In videos circulating online, locals made their case plainly: the film used their neighbourhood’s name and story, so the community should see some of that money. One resident tied it directly to infrastructure. Roads here won’t get fixed, he said, “if India pays.” Others suggested hundreds of crores should go toward public welfare in the area. Several estimated 70 to 80 per cent would be a fair split, arguing the film’s impact came directly from Lyari’s real-life setting.

The film follows an Indian intelligence officer who works his way into Lyari’s gang networks while running a covert mission. The cast includes Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun. It’s a sequel to the original, which made Rs 1,300 crore globally.

Neither Aditya Dhar nor the producers have responded to the demands so far. The videos, however, keep spreading as the film’s earnings grow and have opened up a broader debate about whether communities whose identities appear on screen should have any claim to what gets made off them.
