According to ANI, Bhagyaraj was rushed to Apollo Hospital in the Greenways locality of Chennai after experiencing a cardiopulmonary cardiac arrest. Despite the intensive efforts of the medical staff, the iconic cinematic figure could not be saved and breathed his last on June 27, 2026.

The Architectural Master of Middle-Class Narratives

Born on January 7, 1953, Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj stood as an exceptionally dominant and transformative force in Tamil cinema. Famously hailed as the “King of Screenplay,” he earned widespread acclaim for completely altering the framework of commercial films. Bhagyaraj chose to move away from stereotypical, larger-than-life hero tropes, opting instead to build down-to-earth, middle-class protagonists navigating emotionally resonant stories elevated by sharply written, humorous dialogue.

His journey behind the lens launched with his directorial debut, Suvarillatha Chithirangal (1979). This first venture paved the way for a highly celebrated career that produced iconic cinematic staples, including Andha 7 Naatkal (1981), Mundhanai Mudichu (1983), Chinna Veedu (1985), and Enga Chinna Rasa (1987). Notably, Enga Chinna Rasa laid the groundwork for multiple regional iterations across India, most prominently serving as the foundation for the massive Bollywood hit, Beta.

A Multifaceted Creative Legacy

Bhagyaraj cut his teeth in the movie industry working as an assistant director under the tutelage of the late, widely respected filmmaker Bharathiraja. From those foundational roots, he steadily climbed the ranks to cement his standing as one of the finest screenwriting talents Tamil cinema had ever seen, revered specifically for his ability to write incredibly tight, dialogue-heavy structures.

A prolific individual with a diverse skill set, Bhagyaraj showcased his range by acting in over 75 movies and directing more than 25 films. Beyond his work on movie sets, he operated as a producer, penned novels, and managed editorial duties for the weekly publication Bhagya. His performance in Mundhanai Mudichu won him the prestigious Filmfare Best Actor Award.

The legendary filmmaker is survived by his wife, former actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, alongside his daughter Saranya and his son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj. Strikingly, his death occurred a mere 17 days after the demise of his longtime mentor, Bharathiraja, compounding what ANI notes is a deeply painful period of loss for the entire Tamil film industry.
