Lucknow : A major dispute has engulfed the upcoming Netflix film “Ghooskhor Pandat”, starring Manoj Bajpayee which has been directed by Neeraj Pandey, after its title and teaser sparked widespread criticism for allegedly offending caste and religious sentiments. Critics, particularly users on social media and community groups, argued that the title which connects the term “pandat” (a colloquial form of “pandit”) with “ghooskhor” (meaning bribe-taker) unfairly associates a respected community with corruption, potentially inciting social discord.
Responding to the outcry, police in Lucknow’s Hazratganj area registered a First Information Report against Pandey and several members of the film’s team. CM Yogi government had lodged the FIR under relevant sections of the law, accusing the creators of hurting caste and religious feelings and disturbing public peace. Authorities are investigating whether the title and promotional material were likely to disrupt harmony.
In the face of mounting pressure, Neeraj Pandey issued a statement saying the drama is a fictional story about an individual’s choices and carries no intent to malign any group. He acknowledged that some viewers were hurt by the title and announced that all promotional content had been temporarily withdrawn.
Actor Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the backlash, stressing that the film is not aimed at any community and affirming respect for diverse sentiments. He noted that the promotional material’s removal reflects the team’s seriousness about public concerns.
The case has escalated broader debates on caste representation in Indian cinema and the responsibilities of filmmakers in handling sensitive cultural themes.
