Amaal Mallik Exposes Family Rift and Uncle’s Betrayal in Bollywood Music Scene

In a candid interview, music composer Amaal Mallik has shed light on the deep-seated professional rivalry between his father, Daboo Malik, and uncle, Anu Malik, both sons of the renowned music director Sardar Malik. Amaal revealed that despite their close personal bond, professional tensions have long simmered beneath the surface, significantly impacting his father’s career and mental health.
Amaal described the brothers as inseparable in personal settings, noting, “When Daboo Malik and Anu Malik meet, you can’t separate them. They are like mad brothers.” However, he highlighted a stark contrast in their professional interactions, stating that Anu’s competitive nature often led to jealousy-driven conflicts. According to Amaal, Anu frequently undermined Daboo’s opportunities by offering to work on film projects for minimal or no payment, effectively snatching contracts from his brother. This pattern of professional sabotage, Amaal claimed, contributed to Daboo’s prolonged struggle with depression, which began in his early 30s and lasted until his mid-40s.
Reflecting on his father’s challenges, Amaal shared that Daboo, despite composing for over 70 films, was often overshadowed and referred to merely as “Anu Malik’s brother.” This lack of recognition fueled Amaal’s determination to carve his own path in the music industry. “I started to work at 16, and my only motivation was to take revenge with my music,” he said, emphasizing his goal to redefine his family’s legacy so that Daboo would be recognized as the father of Amaal and his brother, Armaan Malik, rather than just Anu’s sibling.

Amaal also addressed his strained relationship with his uncle, noting that while he remains respectful in public, he does not consider Anu part of his family due to his actions. He distanced himself further by commenting on the sexual harassment allegations against Anu during the MeToo movement, expressing embarrassment over the accusations. “It was not my concern because I don’t consider him my family,” Amaal stated, adding that he believes there may be some truth to the claims given the number of accusers.
Amaal, who debuted as a composer in 2014 with three songs for the Salman Khan-starrer Jai Ho, continues to strive for professional integrity. He recounted a conversation with his father, who once expressed concern about Amaal facing similar allegations. Amaal reassured him, saying, “I can never be the person who will ask for physical favours in return of songs. All the girls worked with me have felt safe.”
These revelations highlight the complex interplay of family dynamics and professional rivalry within one of Bollywood’s prominent musical families, underscoring Amaal’s resolve to honor his father’s legacy through his own achievements.
