When Akshaye Khanna and Karisma Kapoor Were on the Verge of Marriage

Mumbai: As Akshaye Khanna captivates audiences with his recent performances, renewed interest has emerged in his long-guarded private life. The actor, who has often expressed contentment with singlehood, was once at the center of reports suggesting he nearly wed fellow star Karisma Kapoor.

The rumored romance between Khanna and Kapoor reportedly began in the 1990s following a joint photoshoot. Sources at the time indicated that Kapoor, fresh from ending her relationship with Ajay Devgn, developed a close bond with Khanna. Randhir Kapoor, Karisma’s father, reportedly approved of the pairing and formally sent a marriage proposal to Akshaye’s father, Vinod Khanna.

Initial discussions progressed smoothly, with the families appearing aligned. However, according to reports, Karisma’s mother, Babita Kapoor, intervened and halted the plans. At the height of her acting career, Karisma was a leading Bollywood figure, and Babita prioritized her daughter’s professional commitments. Concerns were also raised about the stability of Akshaye Khanna’s trajectory in the industry during that period.

Ultimately, the proposed union did not materialize. Kapoor later became engaged to Abhishek Bachchan, an announcement made publicly by Jaya Bachchan, though that engagement was called off. In 2003, she married businessman Sanjay Kapur, with whom she had two children. The couple separated, and their divorce was finalized in 2016. Sanjay Kapur passed away in June this year, reportedly after suffering a heart attack triggered by swallowing a bee.
