Akshay Kumar Funds Insurance for 650 Stuntmen After Tragic Death

In a significant move to enhance safety in the Indian film industry, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar has personally funded insurance for approximately 650 stunt professionals across the country. This initiative follows the tragic death of stuntman SM Raju, who lost his life during a high-risk car-toppling stunt on the set of the Tamil film Vettuvam, directed by Pa Ranjith and starring Arya.
Kumar’s insurance plan, in place since 2017, provides health and accident coverage, allowing stunt performers to access cashless medical treatment up to Rs 5-5.5 lakh for injuries sustained on or off set. Aejaz Khan, General Secretary of the Movie Stunt Artists Association, commended Kumar’s efforts, noting that the policy, fully funded by the actor for eight years, has significantly benefited the stunt community. Khan highlighted cases where families of stuntmen who died in road accidents received Rs 20 lakh in support through this initiative.
Veteran action director Vikram Singh Dahiya, known for his work on films like Gunjan Saxena and OMG 2, emphasized the dangers stunt performers face and praised Kumar’s contribution. He told that the insurance covers 650 to 700 stunt professionals, offering critical financial protection. Kumar’s actions address long-standing safety concerns in Bollywood, where stunt performers often work without adequate medical or financial safeguards.
