New Delhi : According to a media report, the government is preparing to hand over IndiGo’s 10 percent curtailed flight operations to other carriers. A move triggered by the week-long meltdown at the country’s largest airline that forced hundreds of cancellations across key routes. Sources say that it’s equal to the combined passenger strength of Akasa and SpiceJet. The decision comes after the government ordered IndiGo to slash its schedule by at least 10 percent, doubling the 5 percent cut earlier imposed by aviation watchdog DGCA.
Meeting at the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), attended by senior officials from all major airline operators, was held to review operational readiness, resources at hand, passenger-handling protocols and other technical issues. Sources said IndiGo’s 10 percent operational share would be split among Air India, SpiceJet, Akasa and “other reliable operators” based on their fleet strength and capacity. MoCA wants the redistribution to happen as soon as possible, but officials don’t want reallocated flights ending up cancelled too.
The DGCA’s December 9 order was explicit: It is directed to reduce the schedule by 10% across sectors, especially on high-demand, high-frequency flights, and to avoid single-flight operations on a sector by IndiGo. Sources said the redistribution is meant to put the aviation industry on notice — that airlines can’t take passengers for granted. Any Indigo-like fiasco “will directly impact market share”, they warned. IndiGo has held a dominant 63-65 per cent market share, according to DGCA data.
Top officials estimate IndiGo’s operations market share will settle at around 55-57 per cent once the reshuffle is complete. The government also believes redistribution will give passengers more options and help end the “spree of cancellations”. IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers claimed that the airline is back on its feet and operations are stable. The restoration of the airline’s network and flights was being done on a “war footing”, he stated.
