Budget 2026 Unveils Seven High‑Speed Rail Corridors To Revolutionise Inter‑City Travel Across India

New Delhi : In a sweeping push to modernise rail infrastructure and slash travel times between major urban centres, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday announced the development of seven high‑speed rail corridors as part of the Union Budget 2026‑27, aimed at transforming connectivity and spurring economic growth.

Sitharaman said the proposed corridors will function as growth connectors, linking key financial, industrial and cultural hubs across the country while significantly reducing travel durations. The sections planned include routes such as Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri, according to details of the Budget reveal.

The corridors are expected to enhance connectivity between financial capitals, technology centres, and emerging urban regions creating new avenues for trade, tourism and employment along these strategic corridors.

Several of these high‑speed projects also align with previously announced rail modernisation efforts, such as the ongoing Ahmedabad‑Mumbai bullet train project and expanded service of new‑generation trains including the Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat fleets. Beyond passenger travel, the rail network expansion is likely to benefit the economy by improving logistics efficiency and enabling faster movement of goods, particularly when integrated with freight enhancements and dedicated rail freight corridors.
