Rekha’s Unconsented On-Set Kiss Sparks Debate Over Bollywood’s Past Practices

A recent book sheds light on a troubling incident from the early career of Bollywood icon Rekha, revealing she was kissed without her consent by co-star Biswajeet during the filming of Anjana Safar in 1969. The episode left Rekha feeling betrayed and furious, as the kiss was not discussed with her beforehand. Biswajeet later acknowledged her anger but maintained the act was not for personal gratification, asserting it was essential for the film’s narrative.

However, director Kuljeet Pal presented a conflicting account, claiming Rekha was informed about the scene and had agreed to it. Pal further stated that since kissing scenes were uncommon in Hindi cinema at the time, Rekha was advised to publicly express discomfort to align with industry norms. The film, which began production in 1969, faced delays and was released a decade later in 1979 as Do Shikari. Rekha, daughter of legendary actor Gemini Ganesan, debuted in 1970 with Sawan Bhadon, navigating financial struggles and a challenging entry into Bollywood despite her lineage.
