100 People Committed Suicide In Last 45 Days In Ahmedabad; NCRB Data Raises Concern
Recent Times Are Seeing Newer Reasons For Committing Suicide

From April 1 to May 15, a total of 100 people committed suicide in Ahmedabad, as per police reports. The suicide cases of software engineer Atul Subhash from Bangalore and businessman Punit Khurana from Delhi stirred the entire nation. The reason of suicide in both the cases was alleged to be tension with their respective spouses.
On the other hand, a female constable in Navi Mumbai hanged herself due to being fed up with her husband’s extramarital affairs. From these three cases, it becomes clear that tensions and strained relationships with family can affect one’s mental state to the extent of committing suicide.
According to NCRB data, 32.4 percent of the total suicide cases in the country are due to family stress. After the Covid-19 outbreak, mental health has emerged to be an important concern across the world, and people have started becoming vocal about it in recent times. Helplines have also been created to assist people in various issues.
As per information received from police records, 100 people took the extreme step of committing suicide in the last 45 days. In which, 13 were men, 35 were women, and 1 was a minor. It can be said that more than 2 people in the city commit suicide daily due to their respective reasons.
This portrays a serious situation. In earlier times, the main reasons for suicide comprised of economic and financial constraints, family tensions, illness, marital problems, unemployment, social status, and debt issues. Whereas lately, increasing suicide cases are being reported due to alcohol-drug addictions, professional career, love affairs, and property disputes.
Modern times have seen newer, modern reasons for taking one’s life- facing rejection in love life, low confidence, insecurity and jealousy, failure to match with society’s expectations, etc. have become issues which deeply impact one’s mental well-being. Cases of minors committing suicides are also rising. Such conditions call for awareness measures and provisions of assistance for the citizens, so that suicides can be prevented, and at the least, reduced.
