Mumbai Metro Line 3 Adds Free Wi-Fi at Aqua Line Stations to Offset Network Blackouts

Mumbai: Commuters using Mumbai Metro’s underground Aqua Line can now access free Wi-Fi at station concourses, following widespread complaints about mobile network outages. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) announced the rollout via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, aiming to mitigate the impact of connectivity blackouts on essential digital services.
According to MMRC, the free Wi-Fi initiative is designed to help passengers maintain access to mobile-based services such as digital ticketing, UPI payments, and communication platforms, which were frequently disrupted inside stations and trains.
The Aqua Line, part of Metro Line 3, runs a 33.5-km route from Colaba to SEEPZ, featuring 27 stations—26 of them underground. While the line has been praised for its modern infrastructure and potential to alleviate traffic congestion in Mumbai, the lack of mobile signal had created major challenges for daily commuters.
Currently, only some sections of the Aqua Line are open to the public. The entire corridor is slated to be operational by August, with a formal inauguration expected to be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Once complete, Metro Line 3 is projected to significantly reduce the burden on Mumbai’s congested roads and suburban railway system.
Valued at ₹37,276 crore, the project is seen as a pivotal development in the city’s urban transit landscape. MMRC emphasized that the Wi-Fi rollout is a temporary but essential solution as longer-term mobile connectivity improvements are implemented. The agency reaffirmed its goal of delivering a “safe, reliable, and seamless metro experience” for all riders.
