Tharoor’s Praise for Modi Sparks Debate Within Congress

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s recent commendation of the Narendra Modi government’s actions against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack has ignited controversy within his party. Tharoor’s unequivocal support for the government’s response, dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” has raised eyebrows among Congress leaders, with some questioning whether this signals a shift in the party’s stance.

While the Congress has lauded the Indian armed forces for their role in the operation, it has criticized the Modi government’s abrupt ceasefire announcement, particularly after US President Donald Trump claimed credit for mediating the truce. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned the government’s silence on Trump’s assertions, asking whether India had accepted US mediation or agreed to talks with Pakistan at a neutral venue. Other opposition leaders echoed these concerns, challenging the government’s handling of the situation.

In contrast, Tharoor defended the Modi administration, dismissing Trump’s claims as mere political posturing. He emphasized India’s firm stance, noting that Islamabad had sought the ceasefire after India’s May 10 military strike, which targeted Pakistani air bases. Tharoor’s remarks have provided fodder for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders like Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathy citing his comments to criticize the Congress for politicizing the issue. Thirupathy praised Tharoor’s clarity, asserting that India’s agreement with Pakistan was on its own terms.

Tharoor’s praise for Modi is not new. He has previously commended the Prime Minister’s diplomatic efforts during a US visit and India’s role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, drawing sharp reactions from Congress leaders. These repeated endorsements have fueled speculation about Tharoor’s alignment with the party’s leadership, with some BJP figures gleefully noting his divergence from the Congress line.
The Congress, however, has distanced itself from Tharoor’s views. Jairam Ramesh clarified that Tharoor’s statements do not reflect the party’s position, underscoring internal tensions as the Congress navigates its role as the principal opposition. As Tharoor’s remarks continue to stir debate, they highlight the delicate balance within the Congress between acknowledging national security successes and maintaining a critical stance against the ruling government.
