US Says It Supports Direct Talks Between India and Pakistan, Rubio Spoke With External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

New Delhi : US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Sunday and discussed the India-Pakistan issue, according to US Department of State Spokesperson Tammy Bruce. Secretary Rubio reiterated the US’ support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral communication.

This comes after Rubio on Saturday had a phone conversation with External Affairs Minister of India, S Jaishankar, amid rising India-Pakistan tensions. “Had a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this morning. India’s approach has always been measured and responsible, and remains so,” Jaishankar said on Saturday.

Earlier, a day after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire deal, US President Donald Trump offered to mediate and work with both countries to reach a solution on the Kashmir issue after a “thousand years”. He wrote on Truth Social, “I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.

In a dramatic turn of events, US President Donald Trump took to social media on Saturday to announce that India and Pakistan – after four tense days of cross-border clashes – had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire”. Behind the scenes, US mediators, alongside diplomatic backchannels and regional players, proved critical in pulling the nuclear-armed rivals back from the brink, experts say.
