Pakistani Drone Strike Injures 3 in Firozpur; Blackouts Imposed Amid Rising Tensions

Firozpur: A Pakistani drone reportedly struck a residential locality in Firozpur, Punjab, on Friday, leaving three civilians injured, amid escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan.

Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, SSP Firozpur, confirmed that the injured individuals suffered burn wounds and were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. “We received information about three people being injured. They have burn injuries. Doctors will treat them. Most of the drones have been neutralised by the army,” he stated.

Indian air defence systems successfully intercepted several drones in the region, containing the damage and preventing further escalation. However, the drone strike marks a sharp rise in cross-border aggression.

This incident follows Pakistan’s earlier, foiled attempts to target civilian infrastructure near the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border. On Friday, additional drone sightings were reported in Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot sectors.

Amid the heightened threat, precautionary blackouts were enforced across multiple regions, including Akhnoor and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, Ambala and Panchkula in Haryana, Firozpur in Punjab, and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Tensions surged after the Pakistani military violated the ceasefire again on Thursday, launching drone incursions and airspace violations during the night of May 7–8. According to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, during a press briefing on Friday, around 300 to 400 drones were deployed across 36 sites, primarily targeting Indian military assets. She added that the Indian armed forces intercepted many of these drones using both kinetic and non-kinetic methods.

“Forensic analysis of the drone debris is underway. Initial findings suggest that these were Turkish-made Asisguard Songar drones,” Colonel Qureshi noted. She further explained that the scale of the drone activity appeared aimed at testing Indian air defence systems and gathering intelligence.

Pakistan’s aggressive manoeuvres come in response to India’s Operation Sindoor, conducted on Wednesday. The operation targeted nine terrorist installations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as retaliation for the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
