BCCI Stands Firm Against Pakistan Cricket Ties After Pahalgam Attack

In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reiterated its stance against engaging in bilateral cricket matches with Pakistan. BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla emphasized the board’s position, stating that India will adhere to the government’s directive and refrain from playing Pakistan in bilateral series. This decision follows a deadly attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, which prompted widespread condemnation from the cricket community.
Shukla, speaking to Sports Tak, expressed solidarity with the victims and condemned the attack. He clarified that while India avoids bilateral cricket with Pakistan due to the government’s policy, the two nations still compete in International Cricket Council (ICC) events, such as the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India. However, India opted not to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, with matches, including those against Pakistan, relocated to Dubai due to security concerns. “We stand with the victims and denounce this act,” Shukla said. “Our actions align with the government’s position, and we will not engage in bilateral series with Pakistan moving forward.”
To honor the victims of the Pahalgam attack, the BCCI organized a tribute during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. A minute of silence was observed before the game, announced over the stadium’s public address system, allowing both live and broadcast audiences to pay their respects. Captains of both teams expressed condolences and condemned the attack during the toss. Players, officials, commentators, and staff wore black armbands throughout the match as a gesture of mourning.
The BCCI also ensured the match maintained a somber tone, forgoing cheerleader performances, fireworks, music, and DJ activities to reflect the gravity of the situation. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia extended condolences, expressing sorrow over the loss of lives and reaffirming the board’s commitment to supporting the affected families during this tragedy.
