Mumbai: Actor filmmaker Aamir Khan’s visit to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s Mumbai residence has attracted attention as his nephew, actor Imran Khan, fights a government directive asking him to leave India by October 28. However, the MNS has said the meeting was unrelated to Imran’s legal troubles, and no official explanation of the visit has been given.
Aamir met Thackeray at Shivtirth, the MNS chief’s residence in Mumbai, on Sunday, October 18. The two have shared friendly relations for years and have attended family functions hosted by each other. Aamir’s visit has nevertheless prompted questions because of its timing, coming days after the controversy surrounding Imran’s participation in a political protest.
Why Imran Khan Has Approached the Bombay High Court
Imran, known for films such as Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, received a Leave India Notice from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) on October 14. The directive alleges a violation of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, following his participation in a Mumbai protest on October 10.
The demonstration called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The allegations surrounding the electoral exercise remain politically contentious.
Imran, who holds US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, moved the Bombay High Court on October 17, challenging the notice as arbitrary and unconstitutional. He has sought its cancellation, an interim stay and protection against coercive measures, including deportation, blacklisting and action affecting his OCI status.
The court has agreed to hear his petition on October 26, just two days before the deadline specified in the notice. The timing makes the upcoming hearing particularly significant for the actor.
A Second Notice Adds to the Uncertainty
The controversy has also widened beyond the original directive. Reports on October 19 said Imran had received a separate show cause notice asking him to explain why his OCI registration should not be cancelled. This raises an additional legal question, distinct from his challenge to the order to leave India.
Neither the outcome of the court proceedings nor any change to the October 28 deadline had been confirmed at the time of writing.
For now, Aamir’s meeting with Thackeray remains a separate, unexplained development rather than evidence of political intervention. The immediate focus is on the Bombay High Court, where Imran’s challenge could determine the next stage of his legal battle.
