India Clinch Series 2-0 as Shefali Verma Creates Two Records

Raipur: India’s women’s team made light work of a modest target in the second T20 International against Zimbabwe here on Sunday, securing a one-wicket victory with 67 balls to spare. After being set a target of just 103, India raced to 104 for one, thanks to a commanding 96-run opening partnership between Shefali Verma (55 off 25 balls, including four sixes and six fours) and captain Smriti Mandhana (47 not out off 25 balls, with two sixes and six fours). Anushka Sharma remained unbeaten on one alongside Mandhana as India sealed the match and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Mandhana has now won her first series as India’s captain.

Shefali Creates Two Records

Shefali Verma became the first woman cricketer in the world to score 900 runs in T20 cricket in a single calendar year. She also broke Smriti Mandhana’s record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in women’s T20 Internationals. Shefali has now smashed 111 sixes, surpassing Mandhana’s tally of 109.

Zimbabwe Manage Only 102

Earlier, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat, but the team led by Josephine Nkomo struggled to build momentum and finished at just 102 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. Batter Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano top-scored with 34 runs.

India’s new all-rounder Niki Prasad was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets and taking an excellent diving catch. Kranti Gaud, Deepti Sharma, Nandani Sharma and Shri Charani picked up one wicket each, while two Zimbabwe batters were run out.

India had struggled in the series opener, chasing a target of 115 only after losing four wickets for 19 runs. Sunday’s performance, however, was a different story, as the Indian batters gave Zimbabwe’s bowlers virtually no opportunity to fight back.
