Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, was briefly detained by police at Mumbai’s Marine Drive on Thursday after gathering with supporters who were carrying placards.
A police team that included a woman inspector approached Dipke at the promenade and escorted him to the Marine Drive police station in a van. During the journey, the officer asked him for details of his identity and hometown.
Dipke and the accompanying supporters were taken to the station and made to wait in the waiting area. He was later called to meet senior police officials. He left the station a short time afterwards, appearing calm and smiling.
A video of the brief detention subsequently circulated on social media. Marine Drive, one of the city’s well-known public spaces, is frequently used for gatherings and protests.
