Three college students died and one was critically injured after the BMW they were travelling in crashed into a divider on Mumbai’s Coastal Road and fell nearly 75 feet early on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred around 5 am while the four students were heading northbound from Marine Drive. The deceased have been identified as Sanay Gujjar, 21, who was driving; Aditya Jakasania, 19; and Dhairya Sheth, 17. The injured student, Aditya Oswal, 23, is undergoing treatment at a city hospital and remains in critical condition.
According to police, Gujjar, Oswal and Sheth were BBA students at a management college in Vile Parle. Gujjar, originally from Ahmedabad, was living in Mumbai as a paying guest. The BMW belonged to his family.
Police said the vehicle appeared to be travelling at high speed when the driver lost control. The car first struck the outer wall of the Coastal Road before plunging approximately 75 feet. A senior police officer stated that the high speed was the primary factor that caused the loss of control, leading to the crash and the subsequent fall.
Authorities have informed the families of the deceased and are recording statements from friends and other witnesses as part of the investigation.
