Pope Francis Passes Away at 88; India Declares Three-Day State Mourning

The Vatican confirmed the death of Pope Francis on April 21; his final Easter message called for peace in Gaza.

New Delhi: Pope Francis, the 88-year-old head of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, as announced by the Vatican in an official video statement. The pontiff, known for his progressive stance and global influence, served the Church for 12 years as its first Latin American leader.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell stated, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

Pope Francis made his final public appearance a day before his death, delivering an Easter message in which he called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, reaffirming his commitment to peace.

The Pope had been battling chronic lung disease and was hospitalized at Gemelli on February 14, 2025, following complications from bronchitis. After weeks of treatment, he was discharged on March 23 but remained in fragile health.

In response to his passing, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced a three-day State Mourning as a mark of respect. According to the MHA, the mourning will be observed nationwide in the following manner:

  • Two days of mourning on Tuesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 23
  • One day of mourning on the day of the Pope’s funeral

During this period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across all buildings where it is regularly displayed, and no official entertainment will take place.
