Bikaner: Sandeep Acharya’s journey from Bikaner to winning Indian Idol 2 was one of television’s memorable success stories. But just seven years after his breakthrough, the singer’s life ended abruptly at the age of 29, leaving behind his wife and a newborn daughter.
Sandeep Acharya had everything going for him after winning the second season of Indian Idol in 2006. The singer from Bikaner, Rajasthan, had entered the competition with a dream of making a career in music and eventually emerged as the winner on April 22, 2006. He was only 22 at the time.
His victory brought him considerable recognition and a major opportunity to build a career in the music industry. He won prize money and a car and was also reported to have secured a rs 1 crore contract with Sony. His success on the show turned him into a familiar face among Indian television audiences.
From Bikaner to Indian Idol
Born on February 4, 1984, Acharya developed an interest in singing early in life and participated in singing competitions during his school years. His performances eventually took him to the national stage through Indian Idol.
The second season of the reality singing show aired from November 2005 to April 2006. Acharya won the season, with N. C. Karunya finishing as runner up. Neha Kakkar was also among the contestants that season, although she did not reach the finale.
After his victory, Acharya continued performing at shows and concerts across the country. His post Indian Idol career included musical releases and television appearances, and he remained associated with live performances.
A career that ended far too soon
Acharya’s personal life was also entering a new phase. He married Namrata, and the couple later welcomed their first child.
But during his wife’s pregnancy, reports said that Acharya began facing health problems. The more recent says he was dealing with a liver related illness and later developed jaundice. He underwent treatment and, after showing improvement, was discharged.
The singer’s condition, however, reportedly deteriorated again after he attended a relative’s wedding. His family subsequently took him to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for further treatment.
Contemporary reports from December 2013 said Acharya had been suffering from jaundice and had been admitted to the Gurgaon hospital after his condition worsened. He died there on December 15, 2013, at the age of 29.
His daughter was only days old
The timing of Acharya’s death made the tragedy even more painful for his family. His daughter had been born only around 20 days earlier, according to the recent report. Contemporary reports at the time described him as being survived by his wife and infant daughter, with referring to the child as about a month old.
News of his death shocked people who had watched him rise to fame on Indian Idol. His former judges and colleagues publicly expressed their grief. Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Farah Khan were among those who reacted to the news, remembering the young singer and expressing shock at his sudden passing.
Farah Khan, who judged the second season alongside Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam, remembered Acharya warmly after his death. The reactions reflected how unexpected the news was for people associated with the show.
The legacy of Sandeep Acharya
Sandeep Acharya’s career lasted only a few years after his Indian Idol victory, but his name remains associated with the show’s second season and one of its early success stories.
