Mecca On Alert: Saudi Arabia Intercepts Houthi Drone Near Islam’s Holiest City

Mecca: For a few tense minutes, the warning system in Islam’s holiest city delivered a message Saudi Arabia had never issued during the current Middle East war potential danger in Mecca.

The alert was lifted soon afterward, but by then the significance of the incident had become clear. Saudi air defences had intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Mecca before it could enter the restricted airspace over the city, according to the Saudi led coalition. The coalition said the drone had been launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Saudi authorities did not report any strike on Mecca, the Grand Mosque or the Kaaba. The drone was brought down before entering the city’s prohibited airspace.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al Malki said the interception took place at about 6:50 p.m. on September 15. He described the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims as a “red line” and said Saudi Arabia would take measures to prevent further attacks. Saudi Gazette

The warning itself had been issued hours earlier through Saudi Arabia’s emergency alert system, covering Mecca as well as Jeddah and Taif. Residents were instructed to move indoors, stay away from windows and open areas and follow Civil Defence instructions. The warnings were subsequently cancelled after authorities said the danger had passed.

What made the alert particularly striking was its location. Mecca is home to the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba and receives millions of Muslim pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah. The alert was the first of its kind for Mecca during the latest escalation of fighting, but there is a significant disagreement over what the drone was actually intended to hit.

Saudi authorities said the drone was intercepted while approaching Mecca and characterized the episode as a Houthi attempt against the holy city. Houthi officials, however, denied that Mecca was their target and rejected the Saudi account. The group has said it does not target religious sites.

The incident followed a much broader wave of attacks on Saudi Arabia. A day earlier, Houthi forces launched ballistic missiles and drones from Yemen, with Saudi authorities reporting that 13 civilians were injured in attacks in the kingdom’s south. The Houthis said their operation targeted military infrastructure at the King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, including aircraft facilities, radar systems, runways and ammunition storage areas.

Saudi Arabia has responded with airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, while the Houthis have continued their missile and drone campaign against Saudi territory. The renewed fighting represents a major deterioration from the relative calm that followed the 2022 UN brokered truce, which had sharply reduced cross border attacks.

The danger is no longer confined to the Saudi-Yemeni border. Emergency warnings have appeared across several parts of the kingdom, including Jeddah, Taif, Abha, Jazan, AlUla and Yanbu. Yanbu is particularly sensitive because of its importance to Saudi Arabia’s oil export network.

The escalation is also unfolding against a wider regional crisis affecting energy supplies and shipping. The Houthis have expanded their presence along parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including territory around the strategically important Bab el Mandeb waterway. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has faced disruption to its East-West oil pipeline following an attack that Riyadh has attributed to Iran aligned Iraqi groups.

For Saudi Arabia, however, Tuesday’s episode carries a significance beyond military calculations.

An air defence interception near an ordinary Saudi city would already be serious. An alert over Mecca is different. The city is at the centre of Islamic religious life, and any threat approaching its airspace immediately carries consequences far beyond the battlefield.

For now, the immediate danger has passed. There was no reported impact in Mecca, and Saudi authorities said the drone was destroyed before it entered the city’s restricted airspace.

But the brief warning has underscored a new reality of the conflict the fighting in and around Yemen is increasingly being felt deep inside Saudi Arabia even at the doorstep of Islam’s holiest city.
