Watch: Women Risk Lives Climbing Down Wells Amid Maharashtra’s Water Crisis

Facing an early and intense water shortage, women in Borichiwadi village are descending into nearly dry wells to access drinking water, highlighting a worsening rural crisis.

In Borichiwadi village, located in Maharashtra, signs of an intensifying summer have arrived early. With groundwater levels plummeting, the community is grappling with a severe water shortage even before the season’s peak.

The crisis has forced women in the village to take perilous steps to secure drinking water. As most wells have dried up, they are seen lowering themselves into deep wells using ropes, attempting to collect the remaining water at the bottom. After filling their pots, they climb back up with the heavy load, only to repeat the strenuous task the following day.

Locals say this is not the first time the village has faced water-related hardships. However, the early arrival of scarcity this year has raised alarm. “We don’t know how we’ll survive when summer actually peaks,” one woman expressed.

Despite repeated pleas, villagers report that authorities have shown little action. With rising temperatures, the desperation in Borichiwadi is growing — especially for the women, who continue to shoulder the weight of this escalating crisis.
