Fifteen workers were rescued following the collapse of an iron slab at an under-construction site in the Kudasan area of Gandhinagar on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 9 pm during ongoing construction work at a commercial complex.
Of those rescued, 12 were admitted to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for treatment, while three others who sustained no major injuries were discharged after medical checks. Officials confirmed that all 12 hospitalised workers were stable and none were in critical condition.
Rescue teams from the municipal corporation, district police, administration, State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force responded promptly. Multiple fire brigades, ambulances and specialised equipment, including heavy cranes and metal cutters, were deployed to clear debris and free those trapped. Debris-clearing operations continued through the night as a precaution to ensure no one remained underneath.
The collapse took place while work was underway on a portion of the structure. Senior officials, including the Deputy Chief Minister, visited the site to oversee the response and monitor the condition of the injured. Medical authorities reported that some of the hospitalised workers had sustained injuries such as fractures, though all were stated to be out of danger.
The site manager and supervisors indicated that no further workers were believed to be trapped once the initial rescues were completed. Nevertheless, thorough inspection of the debris continued as a safety measure. An inquiry into the cause of the collapse is expected to follow.
The incident highlights the risks associated with construction activities and the importance of rapid coordinated emergency response. All rescued workers received immediate medical attention, and authorities emphasised ongoing monitoring of those under treatment.
