Security personnel had not yet arrived at the scene of a gunfight between two Naga armed groups in Manipur’s Khumji area of Noney district, which resulted in at least one fatality and five injuries. The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) factions JUF-Jenchui (ZUF-J) and JUF-Kamson (ZUF-K) engaged in gunfire in a remote jungle location.
In order to gain influence and control over Zeliangrong-inhabited areas, the two tribes are embroiled in a long-standing conflict and armed rivalry among Naga groups.
The incident has not yet been officially reported by security agencies.
According to sources, the situation is still unstable and the number of fatalities may fluctuate as security officers arrive and evaluate the situation.
According to sources, the most recent firefight was occurring in a secluded, wooded location near Khumji, far from populous areas. Access has been difficult due to the rough terrain, and security personnel have not yet arrived at the location.
The conflict takes place in the context of a long-standing rivalry between the ZUF and the NSCN-IM, as well as internal ZUF factions.
After a split among former NSCN-IM leaders, the Zeliangrong United Front was established in 2011 and went on to establish a distinct political stance focused on the needs of the Zeliangrong community.
In Khoupum Valley and other Zeliangrong-inhabited regions of western Manipur, such as portions of Noney and other districts, the competition and factional tensions have occasionally led to armed conflicts.
The ZUF has continued to push for the unification of Zeliangrong regions under a single administrative authority and has promoted the protection of Zeliangrong people, land, and natural resources.
