Paris: Football and cricket matches played outdoors are generally moved to another venue when the playing surface is damaged by heavy rain. But something quite unusual has happened in Paris, where extreme heat has made a football pitch unfit for play
French league defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were scheduled to play their opening match of the season at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. However, the match has been moved to another ground because the extreme heat has left the pitch unplayable.
The match between PSG and Rennes will now be played at Rennes’ home ground.
Europe is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with scorching temperatures particularly affecting France. The Parc des Princes pitch has suffered significant damage because of the extreme heat and has deteriorated to such an extent that it can no longer safely host a match.
Player safety has been cited as the major concern. With the pitch in poor condition, players could lose their footing and suffer serious injuries.
With only three days remaining before the match, the venue has been changed at short notice. Spectators who purchased tickets for the match at Parc des Princes are expected to receive refunds, while ticket sales for the match at Rennes’ stadium are reportedly being opened.
