Belfast/Kingston: Afghanistan, who entered the world of ODI cricket 17 years ago, have once again qualified comfortably for the ODI World Cup. However, two-time World Champions West Indies (1975 and 1979) will have to go through the qualification process to earn a place in the World Cup for the third consecutive time.
In 2019, West Indies entered the main World Cup draw after playing in the qualification round. However, for the 2023 World Cup, they had to compete in the Super Six stage to qualify, where they finished fifth and subsequently failed to make it to the World Cup. The Caribbean side will once again have to finish among the top teams in the qualification tournament for the 2027 World Cup. Otherwise, they could face the same shock they suffered four years ago.
Why will West Indies have to qualify?
The top eight teams in the ODI rankings to be announced by the ICC on September 30 will gain direct entry into the World Cup. In addition, the two main host nations, South Africa and Zimbabwe, will also qualify automatically.
West Indies are currently ranked 10th. They have two ODIs against India remaining before the September 30 cut-off date. However, even winning both matches will not be enough for West Indies to secure direct entry into the World Cup. They will have to earn their place by competing in the qualification tournament to be held next February.
What is Afghanistan’s position?
Afghanistan secured direct qualification for the World Cup on Monday by defeating Ireland by three wickets in a thrilling ODI in Belfast. Ireland were bowled out for 206 in 46.3 overs, while Afghanistan chased down the target by scoring 207 for seven in 44.5 overs.
The other teams to have secured direct qualification include 2023 champions Australia, India, England, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
Host nations South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured direct entry into the World Cup, while the third host nation, Namibia, will have to go through the qualification process.
