Activist Sonam Wangchuk claimed that his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, had contacted Congressman Rahul Gandhi to ask for his help in putting an end to Wangchuk’s 26-day hunger strike, but got no response.
Wangchuk stated in an interview that he and his spouse had thought of asking Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition, to assist him in breaking the fast. He said that his wife had worked to make the move easier.
“She didn’t get a positive response,” Wangchuk stated. He said this while defending his wife from criticism for remarks she later made against the leadership of Congress. Wangchuk claims that Angmo’s comments followed her disappointment at the failed attempt to reach Gandhi.
Wangchuk also voiced his displeasure with the opposition leaders’ reaction to his agitation, claiming that only a small number of them paid him a visit at Jantar Mantar and that some of them showed there late.
In support of youth-led protests against purported irregularities in the examination system, the activist went on a hunger strike. He said that his demands included broader changes and accountability in addition to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. In presence of Union ministers Jitendra Singh and JP Nadda, Wangchuk called off his 26-day hunger strike on July 24.
