The state government declared on Wednesday (July 22, 2026) that the current flood wave in certain eastern regions of Assam is the worst in 60 years. In less than a month, the floods had killed at least thirty people and impacted over 8 lakh. Ten persons were killed by floodwaters in five districts over the past 24 hours, according to a late-night dispatch from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
During this time, the number of districts affected by flooding decreased from 16 to 11.
6,53,164 people in 939 communities and crops on 24,897.27 hectares of land have been impacted by the floods. 24,418 people have sought refuge in the 106 relief camps established by the district authorities, according to an ASDMA official.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika earlier responded to a brief discussion on the flood situation in the 126-member Assam Assembly by stating that the calamity in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat, “which rarely experience floods of this magnitude,” has been unusual. He claimed that a significant inflow of water caused by a cloudburst in neighboring Nagaland caught the authorities in these districts off guard.
On July 19, a cloudburst in the Mon area of Nagaland resulted in numerous landslides that killed at least nine persons.
“This is the most destructive flood to hit these communities in almost 60 years. “This is an unprecedented natural disaster,” Mr. Hazarika stated.
Over 8 lakh people have been impacted by the floods thus far, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who visited the impacted areas on Wednesday. “This time, there is less damage to the places that typically see heavy flooding every year. We must identify the root of the issue [in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat] and work with Nagaland to find a solution,” he stated.
He added that the extent of the devastation was unthinkable. “More bodies are being recovered, and there have been several deaths,” he continued.
Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat, three nearby districts, remained the most severely impacted. Thirteen of the twenty-one deaths were recorded from Sivasagar, five from Charaideo, two from Golaghat, and one from the district of Jorhat. Of the 31 persons who have perished as a result of flooding thus far, 25 have died in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat. According to an ASDMA official, the six additional people perished in the districts of Dhemaji, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, and Sonitpur.
Over the next four days, Guwahati and other districts in Assam are expected to experience isolated thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall, according to the India Meteorological Department. In Guwahati, it issued a warning of “aggravated water-logging, flooding, flash floods, slow vehicular movement, and increased risk of localized landslides in vulnerable pockets.”
