In a widely shared video, a police attempt to move student demonstrators in a van in Mumbai’s Chembur neighborhood was thwarted when a man casually approached and opened the latch, allowing several young people to flee.
The incident happened during a student protest at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Udyan Chowk, which is under the control of the Chembur police station, on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in the afternoon. According to authorities, the protest was conducted in defiance of prohibitory orders.
The police reported that between 700 and 800 demonstrators had gathered at the location.
According to an official, the assembly dispersed after the police used restraint and tried to convince the crowd to go. From the throng, about 200 people were identified and taken into custody.

“I am aware that they are carrying out their duties, but they are not doing so in a responsible manner. We must be accountable for our citizens if they act irresponsibly. They must acknowledge that what they did to the students in Delhi was wrong.
“We are unable to visit Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan ought to step down”, the woman says in the video, “If not, he should go to Jantar Mantar and talk to students.”
In relation to the ongoing protests, the Mumbai police claim that between July 18 and July 22, they recorded 13 cases and booked 400 people on counts of unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders.
