New Delhi : A massive monsoon cloud band stretching nearly 7,000 to 10,000 kilometres from northern India across the Himalayas, China and up to South Korea has been captured in the latest satellite imagery. The enormous rain-bearing system, known as a monsoon convergence zone, has formed as moisture-rich winds from the Indian Ocean interact with weather systems across Asia, creating an almost uninterrupted corridor of clouds and rainfall spanning much of the continent.
Meteorologists described the event as a major monsoon surge, with rainfall far exceeding seasonal averages across several parts of the country. Satellite imagery shows dense cloud cover stretching across central, northern and eastern India before extending over the Himalayan region into China and further east toward Japan. Such elongated cloud bands typically develop when the monsoon trough remains highly active, drawing warm, moisture-laden air into a broad zone of atmospheric convergence.
The latest spell comes after weeks of uneven monsoon activity that had left several states facing rainfall deficits. The current phase is expected to significantly improve seasonal rainfall, especially across north and central India. Heavy rainfall has already lashed Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and parts of Rajasthan, while eastern and northeastern states continue to receive intense showers under the influence of low-pressure systems moving inland from the Bay of Bengal.
The spectacular satellite imagery also highlights the interconnected nature of Asia’s weather systems. Although India’s southwest monsoon is often viewed as a regional event, the current cloud band illustrates how it forms part of a much larger atmospheric circulation extending from the Arabian Sea to the western Pacific. With the monsoon expected to remain active through the week, forecasters say the ongoing spell could sharply reduce India’s seasonal rainfall deficit while boosting reservoir levels and providing a timely boost to the kharif cropping season.
