US Vice President J.D. Vance, Wife Usha to Visit India Next Week

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance—the first Indian-American Second Lady—are scheduled to visit India early next week. The visit will include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a spokesperson who confirmed the Vice President’s travel plans to CBS News.

Vice President Vance is currently set to visit Italy this week before heading to India. His trip will span seven days and includes both official and personal engagements. In addition to New Delhi, the Vance family, along with their children Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel, is expected to visit Jaipur and Agra and participate in cultural programs.

This visit comes in the backdrop of significant global economic uncertainty sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policy. Earlier this month, the Trump administration imposed broad reciprocal tariffs, which triggered worldwide trade concerns. However, a 90-day pause was later announced on tariffs for all countries except China.

Although the Vice President’s trip is considered largely private, officials familiar with the matter said there will be formal elements, including scheduled talks with PM Modi on April 21. The agenda is expected to cover key aspects of the India-U.S. relationship, including bilateral trade and ongoing negotiations toward a trade agreement.

Vice President Vance’s stop in India follows his meetings in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. His engagements in Italy will also include participation in pre-Easter ceremonies.

U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Waltz was also scheduled to visit India but has postponed his trip. Meanwhile, this marks the second high-profile American visit to India in recent weeks, following U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s trip, during which she met with PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and NSA Ajit Doval.

The visit comes after earlier talks between PM Modi and President Trump in Washington, where the two nations agreed to work toward a bilateral trade agreement by fall 2025.
