Rajkot: Rajkot witnessed a horrifying accident on Wednesday morning near Indira Circle, where a city bus, allegedly driven recklessly and under the influence of alcohol, rammed into multiple vehicles. The crash led to the tragic death of four people on the spot, while two others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Civil Hospital for urgent treatment. Notably, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) will provide financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh each to the injured.
The incident sparked chaos as a large crowd gathered at the scene. Enraged locals vandalized the bus, forcing police to intervene with a lathi charge to bring the situation under control. The driver, identified as Shishupalsinh Rana, was also seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment.
CCTV footage of the incident, which has gone viral, clearly shows the sequence of the tragedy. As the traffic signal turned green, vehicles began to move slowly when the speeding bus suddenly came from behind, plowing through unsuspecting commuters. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus did not stop at the signal and struck at least 7–8 people.
The police have launched an investigation into the case, while several political leaders rushed to the spot amid rising public outrage. Local leaders, including AAP city president Dinesh Joshi, criticized authorities, stating that despite repeated complaints about negligent driving and intoxicated bus drivers, no action had been taken.
Top police officials including Police Commissioner Brajesh Kumar Jha, Joint Commissioner Mahendra Bagadia, DCP Traffic Pooja Yadav, DCP Crime Parthrajsinh Gohil, along with teams from Gandhigram, University, Malaviya, Crime Branch, and SOG units, reached the scene. MLA Dr. Darshita Shah also arrived at the site to assess the situation.
