Mumbai Brought To A Standstill As Torrential Rains Trigger Waterlogging, Travel Chaos And Flight Disruption

Mumbai: Rentless monsoon showers battered Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitian Region on Monday, bringing normal life to a near halt as widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, transport disruptions and flight delays affected thousands of commuters. The India Meteorological Departement (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for heavy rainfall, with strong winds expected to continue through the day, prompting authorities to urge residents to avoid unnecessary tavel
Low lying areas across the city witnessed severe waterlogging, slowing vehicular movement and causing long traffic snarls during peak hours. Several roads became difficult to navigate as continuous rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, leaving motorists stranded in multiple locations. Emergency teams remained on alert to respond to flooding fallen trees and weather related incidents.
Mumbai’s suburban railway network continued operating but with delays on several routes due to persistent rain and operational challenges. The situation was more severe on long distance services, with rail connectivity between Mumbai and Pune disrupted after landslides damaged tracks in the Bhor Ghat section, forcing authorities to suspend several train services and divert others.
Road transport also took a major hit. The Mumbai Pune Expressway and parts of the old Mumbai Pune Highway were temporarily closed after multiple landslides, leading to heavy congestion and forcing authorities to divert traffic. Taxi and auto rickshaw services remained operational in many parts of Mumbai, but commuters faced long waiting times, surge pricing in app based cabs and delays due to flooded roads and slow moving traffic.
Air travel was also affected as adverse weather reduced visibility and disrupted airport operations. Several flights experienced delays, while a number of Mumbai bound flights were diverted to nearby airports as airlines monitored changing weather conditions. Passengers were advised to check flight schedules before leaving for the airport.
The impact of the monsoon extended beyond transport. Educational institutions across Mumbai and neighbouring districts suspended classes, while the University of Mumbai postponed examinations scheduled for the day in view of the worsening weather and commuter safety concerns. Authorities said revised schedules would be announced separately.
The IMD has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, may continue over the next several hours. Residents living in flood prone and low lying areas have been advised to remain cautious, avoid venturing near the coastline and follow official weather advisories. Civic agencies have deployed emergency response teams and pumps at vulnerable locations to minimise flooding and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
With the southwest monsoon remaining active over Maharashtra, Mumbai is expected to witness more spells of intense rainfall over the coming days. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the city battles one of the most disruptive monsoon episodes of the season.
