New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will jointly inaugurate Maruti Suzuki India’s new manufacturing plant at Kharkhoda in Haryana on Wednesday. The project is one of the biggest recent investments in India’s automobile sector. The Kharkhoda plant is Maruti Suzuki’s fourth manufacturing facility in India. It is expected to increase the country’s passenger vehicle production capacity in a big way.
The company plans to invest around Rs 35,000 crore in the project. Once the plant is fully operational, it will be able to produce 10 lakh vehicles every year and create more than 21,000 direct jobs. The inauguration also highlights the growing economic partnership between India and Japan. Maruti Suzuki remains one of the strongest examples of successful Japanese investment in India’s manufacturing sector.
Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest passenger vehicle maker, with nearly one out of every two cars sold in the country coming from the company. As demand for passenger vehicles continues to rise, Maruti Suzuki has been expanding its manufacturing network to serve both domestic and export markets. The Kharkhoda facility is expected to play an important role in helping the company meet its long-term production goals. It will also strengthen India’s position as a global automobile manufacturing hub.
Once fully operational, the new plant will add an annual production capacity of 10 lakh vehicles, making it one of Maruti Suzuki’s biggest production centres. The project, with an investment of about Rs 35,000 crore, is among the largest greenfield automobile manufacturing investments in India. Apart from increasing vehicle production, the plant is expected to create over 21,000 direct jobs.
