Pregnant Woman Dies By Suicide After Husband Allegedly Demands DNA Test

In a tragic incident from Telangana’s Medak district, a 23-year-old pregnant woman died by suicide after enduring repeated harassment from her husband and mother-in-law over doubts about the paternity of her unborn child.

The woman, identified as Sushmita, had been married to G. Abhilash for about 18 months and was five months pregnant at the time of her death. The events unfolded in Gadipeddapur village under the Alladurg mandal. According to a complaint filed by her mother, Janabai, Sushmita faced ongoing physical and mental abuse as her husband repeatedly questioned her fidelity and insisted on a DNA test for the child.

On June 23, Janabai and her husband visited their daughter’s home to discuss arrangements for the upcoming baby shower ceremony. Tensions escalated during the meeting when Abhilash demanded a DNA test in front of both families. Community elders stepped in to mediate, and the immediate dispute appeared to subside. However, the family reported that the harassment did not stop. Just two days later, Sushmita was discovered hanging at her residence.

Police responded swiftly to the complaint. The body was transferred to Sangareddy Government General Hospital for a post-mortem examination before being returned to the family. Authorities arrested Sushmita’s husband, G. Abhilash, and her mother-in-law. Both were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 85 for cruelty by husband or relatives, Section 108 for abetment of suicide, and Section 3(5) concerning common intention. Janabai has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to her daughter’s death.

This case highlights the profound emotional toll that domestic disputes and unfounded suspicions can exert on vulnerable individuals, particularly during pregnancy. Local police continue to examine the details surrounding the incident as the legal process moves forward.
