Scars Couldn’t Stop Her: Mangala Kapoor’s Inspiring Journey To The Padma Shri

New Delhi: When Mangala Kapoor walked up to recieve the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, it was more than an award ceremony it was the culmination of a journey defined by courage, resilience, and an unwavering belief in herself.

Known affectionately as “Kashi Ki Lata”, Kapoor has spent decades promoting Indian classical music and education. A respected vocalist and former professor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), she inspired countless students through her work in academics and the arts. The Padma Shri recognizes her significant contribution to these fields.

But behind the honour lies a story of extraordinary determination. At the age of 12, Kapoor survived a horrific acid attack that left her with severe injuries. What followed were years of treatement and recovery, including 37 surgeries. For many, such a tragedy would have ended their dreams. For Kapoor, it became the beginning of a remarkable fightback.

With the support of her family and a deep passion for music, she rebuilt her life step by step. Music became her strength, helping her overcome challenges and regain confidence. Over the years, she established herself as a respected scholar, teacher, and classical singer.

Her Padma Shri honour has been widely celebrated, with many describing it as recognition not only of her professional achievements but also of her indomitable spirit.
