Gen Z Homeownership Debate: Why Raj Shamani’s Viral Post Is Resonating

Mumbai: Raj Shamani’s viral comments on GenZ spending habits have sparked a fresh conversation about whether young people are delaying or abdoning the dream of owning a home.

Entrepreneur and podcaster Raj Shamani has ignited a debate online after suggesting that many young people are comfortable spending on small luxuries because major financial goals, such as buying a home, feel increasingly out of reach.

His remark quickly resonated with social media user, many of whom pointed to soaring property prices and rising living costs as the real reasons homeownership feels unattainable. For young professionals in major cities, saving for a down payment has become significantly harder as housing costs continue to outpace income growth.

Supporters of Shamani’s view argued that cutting back on occasional expenses like coffee or dining out would make little difference when property prices run into crores. According to them, affordability not spending habits is the bigger issue.

The debate also reflects changing priorities among GenZ . Many young adults today value flexibility, career mobility and experiences, making renting a more attractive option than committing to a long term mortgage.

Despite the discussion, experts believe GenZ is not giving up on homeownership altogether. Instead many are postponing the decision until they achieve greate financial stability.
