8 Killed After B-52 Bomber Crashes During Test Mission at Edwards Air Force Base

Washington: A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, killing all eight people on board during a routine test mission, according to The Associated Press and Reuters.
The aircraft went down around 11:20 a.m. local time on Monday at the military installation located in California’s Mojave Desert, roughly 100 miles north of Los Angeles. Emergency teams rushed to the scene after the bomber burst into flames following the crash. Officials later confirmed that there were no survivors.
Aircraft Was Part of Radar Upgrade Programme
According to reports by AP News and Reuters, the bomber was involved in a radar modernisation testing programme. The aircraft had been fitted with a new Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar system as part of efforts to upgrade the aging B-52 fleet.

The people aboard included military personnel, government civilians and contractors. Boeing confirmed that two of its employees were among those killed in the incident.
Investigation Underway Into Cause of Crash
Officials said the cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Military authorities have launched a formal investigation, though preliminary observations reportedly suggest a possible flight-control malfunction. Investigators are expected to examine flight data, wreckage and maintenance records as part of the probe.
Following the accident, operations at Edwards Air Force Base were temporarily suspended before parts of the facility later reopened. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink and senior military officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full support during the investigation.
Historic Air Base Linked to Major Aviation Milestones
Edwards Air Force Base has played a major role in U.S. aviation history for decades. AP News noted that the base became famous after test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier there in 1947. The facility has also been central to military aircraft testing and hosted the first landing of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981.
The B-52 Stratofortress, first introduced in the 1950s, remains a key part of the United States’ long-range bomber fleet and continues to undergo upgrades aimed at extending its operational life for several more decades.
