Vancouver/New Jersey: Australia have won six ODI Cricket World Cups, one T20 World Cup and the World Test Championship, yet celebrations across the country on Sunday morning after their FIFA World Cup opener appeared more passionate than many of those cricket triumphs. The excitement followed Australia’s impressive 2-0 victory over Turkey in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver.
While Australian fans erupted in celebration, many Turkey supporters were left stunned by the defeat and expressed their disappointment on social media. Australia, popularly known as the “Socceroos,” secured the win through goals from Nestory Irankunda in the 27th minute and Connor Metcalfe in the 75th minute.

The atmosphere across Australia was electric during both goals. After maintaining a clean sheet throughout the 90 minutes and defeating a highly rated Turkish side, large crowds poured onto the streets to celebrate. Fans congratulated one another with pride as the country enjoyed one of its most memorable football victories.
20-Year-Old Nestory Becomes Australia’s Youngest Goalscorer
At just 20 years of age, Nestory Irankunda became the youngest Australian player to score at a FIFA World Cup. He converted a pass delivered from distance by Paul Okon-Engstler, breaking through Turkey’s defensive line and finding the back of the net.
Australia entered the contest as underdogs but produced a disciplined and determined performance to overcome a stronger and more experienced Turkish side.
Morocco Frustrate Brazil in 1-1 Draw
Meanwhile, in another major World Cup encounter, Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco. Once the dominant force in FIFA rankings, Brazil have seen their supremacy challenged in recent years, and that trend continued in this match.
Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari. However, Brazil responded just 11 minutes later when Vinicius Junior equalised to make it 1-1.
Despite Brazil’s efforts after the break, Morocco’s organised defence prevented any further breakthroughs, and the match ended in a draw.
