Ayodhya: The Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to order a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into allegations surrounding donations made at the Ram Temple has put the spotlight on a question that resonates with millions of devotees across the country: What happens to the money offered at Ayodhya’s grand shrine?
In a significant development, the Yogi Adityanath government has constituted a three member SIT to investigate claims of irregularities linked to temple donations. The panel has been asked to examine the allegations and submit its findings within a fixed timeframe, signaling the seriousness with which the state is treating the issue.
The controversy surfaced after reports claimed there were discrepancies in records related to donations collected at the Ram Temple. The allegations quickly triggered public debate, with opposition leaders demanding transparency and accountability in the handling of funds contributed by devotees.
As the issue gained traction, the state government stepped in and ordered an independent inquiry. The SIT, headed by senior administrative officials, will scrutinize donation records, collection processes and financial management systems connected to the temple.
The probe has become particularly significant because the Ram Temple is not just another religious institution. Since the consecration of Ram Lalla in January 2024, Ayodhya has witnessed an unprecedented influx of pilgrims, with donations pouring in from across India and abroad. The temple has emerged as one of the country’s largest religious donation centers, handling contributions worth crores of rupees.
Reports in recent days further intensified the controversy after investigators reportedly recovered cash during an inquiry involving a temple employee. While the recovery itself has raised questions, authorities have not yet established any direct link between the cash and alleged irregularities in temple donations. Officials have emphasized that conclusions can only be drawn after the investigation is completed.
At the heart of the debate is the management of donation money. According to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, funds received from devotees are utilized for temple construction, maintenance, security, religious activities, infrastructure development and facilities for pilgrims visiting Ayodhya. Trust officials have repeatedly maintained that donations are subject to audit and proper accounting procedures.
The trust has also strongly denied allegations of financial misconduct. Its representatives have stated that ongoing audits have not revealed any major discrepancies and have urged the public not to jump to conclusions before the SIT submits its report.
However, the matter has now moved beyond administrative circles and entered the political arena. Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, have demanded greater transparency regarding the collection and utilization of donations, arguing that devotees deserve complete clarity on how their contributions are being managed.
For millions of worshippers, the issue is not merely political. The Ram Temple was built through decades of faith, public support and contributions from devotees. Any questions surrounding donations naturally attract attention because they involve money offered in the name of faith and devotion.
The SIT probe is expected to determine whether the allegations point to genuine financial irregularities, procedural lapses, accounting errors or simply unfounded claims. Until the investigation is completed, no wrongdoing has been officially established.
What is certain, however, is that the inquiry has brought renewed focus on transparency in the management of donations received by one of India’s most important religious institutions. The findings of the SIT will now be closely watched not only in Uttar Pradesh but across the country.
