KEM Hospital Sends MBBS Student Sejal Pawar on 15-Day Leave Amid Pranit More Show Controversy

Mumbai: Mumbai’s civic-run KEM Hospital has reportedly placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on compulsory leave for 15 days following controversy surrounding her remarks during comedian Pranit More’s stand-up comedy show. The issue gained widespread attention after clips from the performance circulated on social media and triggered strong criticism online.

According to reports, the hospital administration initiated action after the viral video sparked outrage among medical professionals, students and social media users. The controversy revolved around comments allegedly made by Pawar during an audience interaction segment at the comedy event.

Hospital Begins Inquiry

As reported by PTI and several media outlets, KEM Hospital formed an internal inquiry committee to examine the matter. Hospital Dean Dr Harish M Pathak reportedly termed the remarks “unacceptable” and stressed the importance of respecting body donors and deceased individuals used for medical education.

The inquiry panel was tasked with reviewing the incident in line with existing National Medical Commission social media guidelines. Reports stated that after preliminary findings, the administration decided to send Pawar on a 15-day compulsory leave and restrict her entry to the hospital, medical college and hostel premises during that period. 

Emotional During Inquiry

According to Times of India, hospital officials said Sejal Pawar became emotional and repeatedly cried during the inquiry proceedings. Authorities reportedly recommended counselling support to help prevent mental distress and depression.

Sources cited in the reports stated that the decision to grant leave was also influenced by concerns regarding her emotional condition amid the growing public scrutiny surrounding the controversy.

Viral Clip Triggered Backlash

The controversy began after clips from comedian Pranit More’s show surfaced online. During an interaction segment, Pawar allegedly made remarks regarding male cadavers used in medical education. The comments quickly drew criticism from several users who described them as disrespectful toward body donors and the medical profession.

Following the backlash, KEM Hospital launched an internal investigation. Maharashtra Cyber police had also reportedly registered a case linked to objectionable online content associated with the broader controversy involving the show. 

Public Apology Issued

Amid mounting criticism, Sejal Pawar issued a public apology through social media. In her statement, she acknowledged that the subject was sensitive and admitted that her words had hurt sentiments. She clarified that she never intended to disrespect anyone and accepted responsibility for her comments.

Reports said she also stated that the experience had made her reflect on the importance of speaking carefully on sensitive issues, especially as a medical student. 

Fresh Online Debate

The issue has continued to generate debate online, with discussions emerging around ethics, accountability and professional conduct within the medical field. Additional old clips allegedly featuring Sejal Pawar also resurfaced on social media, intensifying the controversy further.
