Mumbai Airport Customs Arrest 2 Sri Lankan Nationals For Smuggling Hydroponic Weed Worth ₹10 Crore From Bangkok

Mumbai: Mumbai Airport Customs officials have arrested two Sri Lankan nationals for allegedly attempting to smuggle hydroponic weed worth nearly ₹10 crore into India from Bangkok. The arrests were made at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) during a crackdown on international narcotics trafficking.

According to Customs officials, the accused have been identified as Mohamed Irshad (30) and Mohomed Fazil (32). Officers intercepted the duo after receiving intelligence inputs and subjected their baggage to detailed examination.

Nearly 10 Kg Of Hydroponic Weed Recovered

During the search operation, Customs officers allegedly recovered close to 9.97 kg of hydroponic weed concealed inside multiple packets hidden in their trolley bags. The seized narcotic substance is estimated to be worth around ₹10 crore in the illegal market.

Officials stated that the contraband was sourced from Bangkok and was allegedly being smuggled into India through Mumbai airport.

Customs Officials Begin Detailed Investigation

The Customs department has registered a case under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Both accused have been taken into custody for further questioning.

According to officials, investigators are now trying to identify the suppliers and intended receivers connected to the international drug trafficking network. Authorities suspect the involvement of additional individuals linked to the smuggling operation.

Rising Cases Of Hydroponic Weed Smuggling Through Airports

The latest seizure adds to a growing number of hydroponic weed smuggling cases reported at Indian airports in recent months. Enforcement agencies have observed an increase in narcotics trafficking attempts originating from Bangkok and other Southeast Asian destinations.

Earlier reports by media outlets, including Free Press Journal, highlighted multiple cases involving hydroponic weed concealed in baggage and food packets by international carriers arriving in Mumbai.
