“No Intention to Hurt Sentiments”: Riteish Deshmukh Apologises Over Shivaji Maharaj T-Shirt Controversy

Bollywood and Marathi cinema star Riteish Deshmukh has issued a public apology after facing severe backlash over a video from the success party of his directorial venture Raja Shivaji. The video, which went viral on social media, showed Riteish dancing to a Bollywood song while wearing a T-shirt featuring an image of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The clip triggered strong criticism from many netizens, who called the act disrespectful to the revered Maratha warrior king. Some users also alleged that Riteish appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Riteish’s Clarification:
In a detailed statement shared on his Instagram Stories, Riteish expressed deep regret if anyone’s sentiments were hurt. He clarified that he wore the T-shirt because he had come directly from a promotional event for the film and did not get a chance to change.

He emphasized, “As a devotee of Shivaji Maharaj (Shivpremi), I had no intention of disrespecting him.” Riteish also strongly denied the alcohol allegations, stating, “I have never consumed alcohol in my life, nor will I ever do so in the future.”
About the Film:
Raja Shivaji, which marks Riteish’s directorial debut in Marathi cinema, has been a massive commercial success. It has become the first Marathi film to cross ₹120 crore at the box office. The film stars Riteish alongside Genelia Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, and others.
In his note, Riteish described the party as a small celebration to thank the cast and crew who worked tirelessly for three-and-a-half years. He mentioned that the person who recorded and shared the video was not even invited to the private event.
The actor concluded his statement by reaffirming his immense respect and loyalty towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, ending with “Jai Shivray.”
