New Delhi : What is usually seen as a platform for glamour, confidence and achievement has now found itself at the centre of a regulatory probe. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation into Mrs India Inc, one of the country’s well known beauty pageants for married women, over allegations of unfair and restrictive practices.
The action follows a complaint by a contestant from the 2024 edition, who claimed that participants were required to sign contracts containing conditions that could limit their future opportunities. According to the CCI’s preliminary findings, some clauses allegedly restricted contestants and winners from participating in or associating with rival beauty pageants for several years. Certain provisions also reportedly required participants to seek approval before taking up professional assignments.
The competition watchdog observed that such conditions may be excessive and could potentially hinder fair competition within the industry. Based on its initial assessment, the regulator found enough grounds to order a detailed investigation by its Director General.
The probe will examine whether Mrs India Inc’s agreements and business practices violate provisions of the Competition Act. It will also look into concerns regarding the transparency of contracts and the obligations imposed on contestants after joining the pageant.
The development is significant as it brings the beauty pageant industry under the scanner of India’s competition regulator, a sector that has rarely faced such scrutiny. The outcome of the investigation could have far-reaching implications for how pageants engage with participants and frame contractual agreements in the future.
For now, the spotlight has shifted from the runway to the regulator’s office, as the CCI begins a closer examination of the practices behind the crown.
