PM Modi Directs Authorities to Take Strongest Action Against Varanasi Gang Rape Accused

Varanasi:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi, upon arriving in Varanasi on Friday (April 11), was briefed by senior district officials on the recent gang rape case that has shocked the city. The briefing was conducted by the Police Commissioner, Divisional Commissioner, and District Magistrate. Modi directed authorities to take the strictest possible action against the perpetrators and ensure robust measures are in place to prevent such crimes.

The case involves a victim who was discovered unconscious on April 4. She later alleged that she had been raped by 23 individuals over seven days. So far, nine accused have been taken into judicial custody by the District and Sessions Court, and police have confirmed that arrests of the remaining suspects are underway. A case has been filed at the Lalpur Pandeypur police station under appropriate legal sections.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also visited the site ahead of Modi’s scheduled public address to review preparations.

In addition to responding to the crime, Prime Minister Modi is focusing on a series of major development projects aimed at boosting infrastructure in Varanasi. He is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for multiple road and electricity projects worth thousands of crores.

Among the initiatives is a road bridge connecting Varanasi Ring Road to Sarnath, flyovers at Bhikharipur and Manduadih crossings, and a highway underpass tunnel near Varanasi International Airport—projects valued at over ₹980 crore.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced additional plans including the inauguration of two 400 KV and one 220 KV power substations in Jaunpur, Chandauli, and Ghazipur districts, totaling ₹1,045 crore. He will also lay the foundation stone for a 220 KV substation in Chaukaghat, a 132 KV substation in Ghazipur, and enhancements to Varanasi’s electricity distribution system worth ₹775 crore.

Security upgrades are also in focus. Modi will inaugurate a new transit hostel at the Police Line and barracks at PAC Ramnagar. Foundation stones will be laid for new administrative blocks at police stations and a residential facility at the Police Line.

On the education and public welfare front, the Prime Minister will inaugurate institutions such as a Government Polytechnic in Pindra and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Government College in Barki. Additional launches include 356 rural libraries and 100 Anganwadi centres.

He will also lay the foundation for the renovation of 77 primary schools under the Smart City Mission and the construction of a new building for Kasturba Gandhi School in Cholapur.

To boost sports infrastructure, PM Modi will initiate the development of a synthetic hockey turf with floodlights and gallery seating at Uday Pratap College and a mini stadium at Shivpur.

Other highlights of the visit include the inauguration of revitalized ghats at Samne Ghat and Shastri Ghat on the Ganga River, 130 rural water supply schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission worth over ₹345 crore, improvements in six city wards, and artistic landscaping across the city.
