Release Of ‘Phule’ Delayed After Objections By Brahmin Federation: CBFC Demands Changes In Film
Board Orders Removal Of Caste-Based References

The release of the Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa-starrer film Phule has been delayed by 2 weeks. Although the film was scheduled to hit the big screens this Friday, on April 11, it will now get a new release date. Apparently, members of the Brahmin community objected over their portrayal in the movie. As a result, several caste-related references are set to be removed from the film before its release, owing to the demand of the Central Board of Film Studies (CBFC).
As per sources, the producers have been instructed by the CBFC to make numerous changes, which also include removing a voiceover related to the caste system. In addition, some dialogues have been modified to ensure their appropriateness to the scene and suitability for a wide range of audience. Moreover, the Board ordered the removal of terms considered derogatory, like “Mahar”, “Mang”, “Peshwai”, and certain references to the “Manu’s system of caste”.
Anand Dave, President of the Brahmin Federation, lodged a complaint and alleged that the film stigmatizes Brahmins and promotes caste-based discrimination. Shortly after the trailer was released, he criticized it saying that it highlighted caste-based prejudice, and also overlooked the contributions of Brahmins who supported Mahatma Phule’s reform efforts. Dave called the story one-sided. He said that he was not opposed to the truth being shown, but wanted that it should be inclusive. The film could inflame caste-based tensions, he added.
On the other hand, director Ananth Mahadevan, while defending the film said that the depiction remains close to historical reality, albeit with some cinematic liberties. He claimed that he is a Brahmin himself, and naturally he would ask himself first if he is doing the right thing when making a film about caste differences.
He further added that he is not afraid of criticism, and hopes that audiences approach the film with an open mind. He firmly stated that his aim is simply to clear the little cobwebs in people’s minds. He wouldn’t allow Brahmins from across the world to question him or cast doubts on his intention.
Meanwhile, former minister and NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad opposed the censorship and backed the original content shown in the movie. He mentioned on ‘X’ that history cannot be altered and events portrayed in the film about Mahatma Jyotirao Phule are historical facts, not subject to denial.
There are also rumors that the film’s release has been postponed in order to avoid clashes with other films. Initially, the film was to be released on April 11, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Phule. However, owing to the ongoing controversy, the film will now release on April 21.
